Scope
Basic terms and definitions in the field of karst speleology and the types, causes, morphology, accumulation, meteorology, archives, biology, exploration, tourism, culture, etc. of karst caves. Scope of application This document applies to language communication and written expression in the exploration, development, protection, tourism management, scientific research, popular science, teaching, and academic activities of karst caves.
Introduction

Standard Framework and Core Values

This standard systematically constructs a terminology system for the first time, including 12 technical modules such as karst cave typology, genetic mechanism, and morphological classification, filling the gap in my country's standards in this field. In particular, it standardizes the international expressions of Chinese-specific terms such as tiankeng and stalagmite microstratigraphic chronology.

Innovation in karst cave typology

Classification dimensionsTraditional termsInnovation of this standard
Genesis classificationKalusic cave/non-karst caveAdded 6 subcategories including sulfuric acid cave and hot water cave
Hydrological stateWater cave/dry caveRefine the dynamic zoning of undercurrent zone cave and vadose zone cave
Morphological characteristicsSingle tunnelEstablish topological classification of sponge caves and net caves

Technical analysis of typical terms

Tiankeng

It is clearly defined as a giant negative landform with a depth and diameter exceeding 100 meters, and distinguishes between two types of formation mechanisms: collapse type and erosion type. Taking the Chongqing Xiaozhai Tiankeng as an example, its volume reaches 119 million m3, which meets the judgment requirement of "the bottom was once connected to an underground river" in the standard.

Stalagmite microlayer chronology

Five microscopic observation methods, including translucent microlayer and luminescent microlayer, were innovatively proposed to establish a "microlayer thickness-climate response" model. The stalagmites of Sanbao Cave in Hubei Province have achieved 640,000 years of continuous climate reconstruction, verifying the scientific nature of the precession cycle record clause in the standard.

Implementation suggestions

  1. Scientific research field: Use the terminology of Cave Rejuvenation Archives to unify the research description of karst evolution
  2. Tourism development: Refer to the calculation formula of Cave tourist capacity to control the reception intensity
  3. Conservation practice: Apply the Light plant monitoring clause to evaluate the impact of artificial lighting

Guangxi Leye Case

When the Dashiwei Tiankeng Group applied for World Heritage, the judgment indicators of collapse-type tiankeng in this standard (volume>>1 million m3, surrounded by cliffs, etc.) were strictly adopted, and the morphological description of its stone nozzle was included as a model of standard terminology application.
